The sport's national controlling bodies are Archery New Zealand (ANZ), New Zealand Bowhunters Society Inc (NZBS) and the New Zealand Field Archery Association (NZFAA).

ANZ is the governing body of target archery in New Zealand and is affiliated with FITA (Federation Internationale de Tir a l'Arc), Oceania Archery Association and the New Zealand Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association. Archery New Zealand holds annual national championships for target, field, clout and indoor archery and has also hosted the Oceania Regional Championships.

NZBS stages an annual tournament over the Queen's Birthday weekend and a 3 day field shoot with the presentation of game and tournament trophies and regulates bowhunting activities by members through a uniform Code of Ethics, Rules of Fair Chase and a National Bowhunter Education Programme, maintaining the New Zealand Record Book of Bow-Shot Game.
